Analyzing the components of food security of rural households in Shiraz city

Abstract

Providing more than two-thirds of food is the responsibility of rural communities, which play an important role in ensuring food security. Evidence shows that the situation of food security providers is unfavorable compared to urban communities. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate food security indicators among rural households in Shiraz, which has been done among 368 resident households. The data required for this survey research were collected through stratified random sampling method. In this regard, in-person interviews were conducted and 368 questionnaires were completed in 2019. The face validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by faculties of agricultural extension and education of Shiraz University and a pilot study was used to determine the reliability. The results of the food security situation of the villagers of Shiraz show that 24.7% of the subjects in very safe food conditions, 21.9% in safe food conditions, 30.5% in moderate conditions, 13.5% in unsafe conditions food and 9.4% are in very unsafe food conditions. According to the FAO, four components for food security were considered in this study, which is based on the average of the components of availability, access, utilization, stability. The findings also showed that there is a significant relationship between education, number of household members, land and the number of training courses attended. Therefore, food security is an indicator of individual and family health that its study can help policy makers and other institutions to improve the situation, especially in rural communities.
