Farmers’ Adaptation Intention to Climate Change by Using Structural Equation Modeling: A Case Study of Rural Areas in Chardavol County, Ilam Province, Iran

Abstract

This study aimed at understanding farmers’ adaptation intention to climate change by using structural equation modeling in Chardavol county, Ilam province of Iran. The statistical society included all the farmer households in rural areas of the county exposed the climate change (particularly drought) over past ten years (N=9169). Bartlett table was used to estimate the sample size, resulting in the selection of 192 individuals (households). The multi-stage probability sampling was used in this study. The findings indicated that the farmers were more likely to have an adaptation intention when they perceived higher risks of climate change and greater effectiveness of adaptive measures; in contrast, they were less likely to intend to adapt when they were subject to wishful thinking, denials of climate change risks, and fatalism; in addition, the adaptation intention increased when the farmers perceived greater influences of the increases in electricity, water and fuel prices.
